Wearing History #4001
1940s Sailor Girl Playsuit-  Blouse, Shorts, and Skirt

Also available as an e-pattern.  Find it on this page.

This darling sailor playsuit is a perfect example of the patriotic and nautical fashion so popular in the 1940s. It includes a blouse, high waist shorts with button accents at the sides, and high waist skirt. This is so much fun to wear, and the separates can easily be mixed and matched with other pieces in your wardrobe for nautical flair!
This pattern was based on an original vintage pattern and retains the period pattern fit but has been updated to include easy to understand pattern markings, our standard sizing and seam allowance. This pattern been updated to include brand new step-by-step illustrated instructions, and a yardage chart and cutting layouts for modern 45" and 60" fabric widths. The pattern is printed on good quality bond paper. This pattern comes all neatly packaged in a clear resealable plastic bag so you can keep your pieces, instructions, and you can add your own fabric swatch and inspiration photos so they can be kept in one handy little packet!

Intermediate dressmaking knowledge and a muslin mock up of the pattern are suggested, as fit, ease, and construction are different than modern standards.

If you are between sizes order the next size larger, as my patterns have less ease than modern standards.  Please order pattern by measurements (given in inches), as the size numbers do not equate to modern pattern sizing and pattern sizing can vary from pattern to pattern on my website.

    This is a great pattern

This is a great pattern, it’s classic yet versatile, and offer endless opportunities for variation. It sews up easily, and the directions are good.

I made a summery lobster playsuit from the blouse and shorts pattern. To see more photos and read about the process, you may visit my blog post

Thanks, Lauren, for a great pattern!

I have sewn both shorts and skirt. The more I wear it the skirt, the more I like it. It’s easy to sew and easy to fit. I tend to wear my vintage pieces with modern styling and both the shorts and skirt work well for both.

I’ve made the shorts and the skirt and am quite happy with both of them. I generally abhor shorts, but these have a great a vintage fit that is quite flattering. I get compliments whenever I wear them. My blog post about the shorts is at

This pattern was super easy to follow (other than a ditzy moment, but Lauren cleared that up for me) and the outcome was gorgeous. I used this for my Halloween costume this year and got so many compliments on it! It was very comfortable to wear as well. I can’t wait to have another occasion to wear it or lend it out to someone else to enjoy! :) Thank you Lauren for your help!

Authentic style & fit. Absolutely Wonderful. Easy to use, Simple & straight forward instructions. Anyone can make from these patterns. So easy. Would be great if you introduced them in child sizes, as I do a lot of sewing for a dance school & this would save me having to draft downsized patterns.
When I need another historical pattern I know where to look!!
    Thank you!! :-))

I saw Brittany’s outfit on her blog and knew this was just the pattern I had been looking for! I made a white top with navy trim, and navy shorts (which I haven’t had the chance to wear as it’s still winter in NZ) and a navy skirt. I wore the top to a vintage market last week and received lots of compliments about it. I made muslins for the top and shorts, then went straight ahead with the skirt and just adjusted the seams a little. The instructions were very easy to follow, it was fun and quick to sew and all three pieces are very flattering and easy to wear.

    TOO CUTE!!

I made the skirt, shorts and short sleeved blouse from this pattern. It went together much faster than I thought it would and the instructions were very easy to follow! I’m a size larger than the largest size available so I graded the shorts and blouse up a tiny bit. I also added length to the blouse so there would be more room to tuck in. I was worried about how the shorts would fit on someone with a lower tummy and big thighs but they are so comfortable and fit like a dream! The darts on the back of the shorts create a gorgeous line. I particularly love the little tucks on the sleeves. They form a perfect 40’s shape. See my sailor play suit here:

This pattern is great! I’ve made all three pieces in a traditional navy blue with white trim. The shorts are very flattering and I only had to make a few tweaks to get them to fit. There is definitely a lot of ease in the hips and I’d highly recommend a muslin first. I actually drafted them into pants and I love them! The top came out super cute (although it took me a bit to figure out that slide fastener meant zipper). The skirt was a surprise favorite. The shape is crazy flattering. It completely hides my tummy and is a great 40s shape.
